Welcome to Hoops and Crumbs
Speaker 1Welcome to Hoops and Crumbs with the Browns , the podcast where life lessons are baked in like chocolate chips . I'm Maria Brown .
Speaker 2And I'm Esteban Brown . Together , we're always talking basketball , life and everything in between . Whether we're dunking on the court or in the milk , there's always something cooking , so grab a snack and tune in .
Speaker 1Well , Ezzie , August has come and gone . It feels like we should talk about how we wrapped up the summer and why we've been silent for a bit . But before we do that , I see you have some crumbs on your plate .
Speaker 2Yeah , so earlier today you made a chocolate chip sour cream cake , so I'm going to try it right now . Well , I already tried it , but I'll try it again for the mic .
Speaker 1Don't drop crumbs on my carpet .
Speaker 2Yeah , it's good . It's good . I I mean , it's been a while since you've done this it's been a while since I've done any real baking
Summer Wrap-Up and Highlights
Speaker 2yeah , it's good . It's good . Obviously's very sweet . The chocolate chips are a nice add-on , but the sour cream is not super prominent .
Speaker 1No , I think it just makes it more moist .
Speaker 2Yeah , but I wish it was more flavorful because I like sour cream .
Speaker 1Oh , interesting , Interesting . Note to self add more sour cream .
Speaker 2Yeah , so the reason we've been gone for so long is that recently school started , so that's the main reason why we haven't made any episodes .
Speaker 1Man , we have been pretty busy like you know the whole shtick .
Speaker 2So , uh , um , I've been waking up at five in the morning to do six in the morning workouts and runs , and this is not like voluntary , like this is a mandatory workout for the school . So I've been waking up at five in the morning , coming home after my five , coming home after my five o'clock practice , and I'll get home at like six and then I have to do my homework and I have to eat dinner and then , because I'm so tired , I basically just go to sleep . So we haven't really had enough time to make one of these episodes .
Speaker 1Yeah , it's been pretty tiring for both of us . Before we get too deep into the school year , should we do a summer wrap-up ?
Speaker 2Sure , do you want to start , or should I ?
Speaker 1Why don't you start ?
Speaker 2Okay , so I'm not going to be asking too many questions today , but what was your best summer highlight ?
Speaker 1Well , we spent a week in the countryside north of Ottawa and that was pretty nice . It was nice to just have a change of scenery and wake up and look out onto a lake and , you know , sit on a dock and relax in a jacuzzi . All that was pretty good and it was nice to spend time with family uh , yeah , yeah , I think the the cabin or the cottage was it was . Yeah , it was nice A little bit quieter than our normal leaving town for a long time , but it was a good break nonetheless .
Speaker 2Yeah , for sure . Lots of nice times on the water .
Speaker 1Yeah , did you have a favorite summer memory that came out of that ?
Speaker 2Out of that , my favorite memory was probably just hanging out around just chilling .
Speaker 1Oh , you like making campfires .
Speaker 2Yeah , I was the campfire guy .
Speaker 1You were the campfire king .
Speaker 2That was pretty fun , but aside from that , you know , just relaxing with the fam .
Speaker 1Cool . Do you have a favorite summer memory overall ?
Speaker 2Overall , that's tough Nar . Narrow all my summer down to one memory , well , I think . Aside from that , another big highlight for me personally was , um going to huntsville to see all my buddies . So , uh , the story goes , I went to camp like three years ago and , uh , I met all these guys from huntsville that I became like really good friends with , but obviously huntsville is not in toronto . So , um , we were supposed to go to quebec , right quebec city or something , or montreal , montreal , montreal . We're supposed to go to montreal one weekend and it got cancelled .
Speaker 1So I think we just decided to go to Huntsville instead and I got to hang out with my buddies and that was really fun so for everybody that needs a little bit more context , esteban met some kids that don't live in the city that we live in , so they stayed in touch long enough to be able to make plans to hang out over a weekend .
Speaker 2Yeah , and we still talk and play video games .
Speaker 1Which is amazing .
Speaker 2It's basically how we keep our relationship up .
Speaker 1Yeah , that's a great memory .
Speaker 2So what did we not get to do this summer that you really wanted to do ? Because we did do a lot this summer .
Speaker 1Man , I feel like the summer was super busy . Oh , and I'm yawning as I think about how busy we were . I think we did quite a bit . I would have liked to have gone on more country drives , see the lavender fields or pick some strawberries , do some things like that , but it feels like our weekends were so jam packed . I think next week , next year , we'll definitely have to set aside some weekends to go strawberry picking .
Speaker 2Yeah , I think I would have enjoyed that , but alongside with that we had some some car car issues and car difficulties .
Speaker 1Yeah .
Speaker 2We , we got it .
Speaker 1We got a new car this summer yeah , that's true , that was a bit of a highlight , also a low light when we get stuck on the highway , we would get stuck driving on the highway . It's a bit bit frustrating , but for for context our old car , ferdinand .
Speaker 2Uh , what was it ? A 2015 , 2014 , 2014 audi a6 . Yeah , used to um , uh , or I don't know . There's something wrong with
New School Year Challenges
Speaker 2it , like the engine , and you're just having a lot of difficulties for for a while like for ferdinand time , maybe . When was that ? Like a year ago , we got stuck on the highway headed to what's that Chinese place called .
Speaker 2We were going out for dinner with friends , yeah , yeah , we were going to the Mandarin and we got stuck on the highway . That was like the first time . And then , you know , there was a lot of . The issues kept continuing , so we just decided .
Speaker 1Ferdinand had to go . Ferdinand had to go , it was his time , yeah .
Speaker 2So now we have Datilak , yeah , which is our 2026 Cadillac Vistic yeah .
Speaker 1Yeah , we got a bigger vehicle , all electric , so we've joined the electric crew .
Speaker 2Yeah , and we have the whole charger set up downstairs .
Speaker 1Yeah , and we have the whole charger set up downstairs . Yeah , it's pretty cool . So I think it'd be fun next year to take the Datilac to go strawberry picking .
Speaker 2Yeah , and I think that was also a pretty good summer memory yeah it was kind of neat .
Speaker 1Any summer bangers come out of your iTunes playlist .
Speaker 2Summer bangers . That's tough . I mean . There were a lot of great albums that I listened to that dropped . There were some bad albums . Jack Boys 2 by Travis Scott was not very good . Like a lot of people said , that album was amazing . I don't buy into the hype . I think that album is not good . What else ? What else released ?
Speaker 1That's a hard question I don't know any of these , the music that you listen to well , drake drake released two songs .
Speaker 2Uh , what did I miss ? And what's the other one ? What did I miss ? And how can't I , how can't I remember this wasn't a which one which one ? Which one , which one , which one , which one by Drake and Central Sea . There was a lot of other songs and albums that got released For Nothing by Nine Vicious . What was the one Che released , I don't know . Rest in Base .
Speaker 1I don't know .
Speaker 2Yeah , I mean there was a lot of good songs . I don't think there was a specific one . Uh , I'd say I listened . I listened to a lot of everything like just a lot of music , a lot of great music , Sweet Nothing , nothing specific .
Speaker 1All right , all right . Well , the season is changing . It is still summer , but the start of the new year , the start of the school year , is upon us . From most other kids in Toronto . With that , I have one last question before we talk about how your school year is going what's your favorite season overall ?
Speaker 2Like in terms of the four seasons of the year , correct ? Or are we talking about the four seasons ? Hotels , what , what , what ? No Favorite season ? I think I love winter . I really I've always winter , I've always been a winter guy , but I I also really I love skiing . So that's kind of why . But I didn't get to do much skiing last year , so we have to , we definitely have to find time , like I want to go skiing a couple of times this year . That's one of my favorite , favorite , absolute favorite things to do and if you haven't gone skiing or snowboarding ever , it's definitely something you should try . Like even like mom , you don't see your snowboard , but you've gone a couple times when , like me or jeff go yeah , so like even you can kind of vouch , it's pretty fun yeah , it is fun .
Speaker 1So if there are any listeners out there that would like to take us to band skiing , I will happily send you our address and you can pick them up and he could go skiing with you . Yeah , okay . So moving on to the news , oh sorry .
Speaker 2One more thing about the winter . There's no bugs .
Speaker 1So that's true , that's a good , that's a good bonus . There is no bugs . And then you do like to go shoveling yeah , we were trying to .
Speaker 2We were trying to eat breakfast this morning just outside and like in the back , in the backyard , and a bunch of wasps came and ruined our party we got wasped out .
Speaker 1Yeah , all right . Well , it was a super busy summer . Um , I'm happy to switch gears and get back into normal routine with going to school , and I am looking forward to digging into your goals for the upcoming year . You already talked about how your schedule has
Basketball Goals and Coach Z
Speaker 1changed quite a bit . Um , do you want to share with everybody a little bit more about what the year is shaping up to look like ?
Speaker 2well , what do you mean specifically ?
Speaker 1well , you talked about your 6 am practices . What else ? What else do you have that's new this year ?
Speaker 2Well , we have a new coach , coach Z . Oh yeah , so I joined another team . I'm with Remix again this fall , but I wasn't with them last fall and in terms of extracurriculars , the only one I had left was dance . But I had to quit that because I don't really have much time and I decided , you know , it would be easier for me . And I mean it was a good decision , because I also decided before I found out about all this , you know , actual early morning wake ups and and all that Like if I had known that before , who knows if I would have , like , stayed with remix . That's a lot of that's a lot . It's a lot , and I don't know how I'm going to manage that . We'll see , we'll see .
Speaker 1Cool , so you were about to talk about Coach Z .
Speaker 2Oh yeah , so well , last year we had well , I've had four coaches over three years . The only one that's been at the school for multiple years is Coach Z , which obviously tells me that he is much more experienced than the other ones . So first year I had coach coach Vijay . I had coach Vijay and then , like nearing the end of season maybe three months before the season ended he stopped . He wasn't there anymore . So then we had coach Mike . Then , that's right . Then coach mike left , uh over the off season . So then we came back and we had coach jordan and now we have coach z . So coach z's always been at the school , but he was always uh coaching for the senior team . So now he's just the coach for the junior team , uh , because he was the assistant coach last year .
Speaker 2But yeah , I mean I'm looking forward to the to the season with him to see what it's like being coached by him . I mean , he's definitely much more no nonsense than the other guys . And is that a good thing or a bad thing ? I think it's a good thing , for I think it's a good thing because that's kind of what we need as the junior team . There's clearly a lot of talent around us . Like we're not , especially last year . We were not bad players like we had . We were very , very good at basketball , but we were also very bad at staying in line and staying in check . So I think it's good that he's much more strict in terms of uh , outside , outside of the hardwood okay , you can see what you're going to learn from coach .
Speaker 1Is he pretty well ?
Speaker 2yeah yeah , definitely gonna develop more discipline cool .
Speaker 1Well , we like that , love discipline , um , so I'm gonna be the one asking you some questions about school year .
Speaker 2Yeah , so actually can I start , because I have one question to ask One question . Well , it's pretty hard for me to talk to ask you three questions about my school year .
Speaker 1Yes , you have to get all A pluses .
Speaker 2Well , that was never really a question .
Speaker 1I already knew the answer no , you are not allowed to have any lates .
Speaker 2I already knew the answer . No , you are not allowed to have any lates . I already knew the answer . Okay , well , that's , that's something that I , you know I can talk about . I'm the . I'm one of two people that hasn't been late to a single morning practice , yet so that's good , that is good . We like that yeah , so anyways , uh , for my one , and only question what adjustments and improvements do you want to see from me on the court or off the court , this upcoming school year ?
Speaker 1Hmm , well , on the court , I want to see you continue to uplift your teammates , whether you're on the actual court or whether you're waiting on the bench for your turn . Whether you're waiting on the bench for your turn , I think we know this attitude is everything , and your attitude while you're waiting for your turn and your attitude when you're on the court is just as important . So I want to make sure that that stays upbeat and that you're showing leadership , regardless of the position you're playing in the moment . So that's my on court thing technique , whatever that'll all come . Technique , dunking , stealing , whatever , all you do in the in basketball . That's all just going to happen with practice .
Speaker 2but on court adjustment , definitely positivity and leadership um , so sorry , there's no skills you want to see me do like or utilize this season no , because the skills will just develop automatically with practice , right , with consistent practice .
Speaker 1All those skills of being faster , being more assertive , those will come , but what will take focus is your attitude yeah I'd like to see what coach tony thinks of that question .
Speaker 1That answer , because I bet he would say the same thing . Um , and then academically , I would like to see , um , your basketball discipline trickle into your educational discipline . So , you know , you know that you got to get to practice on time . I would like to see that your homework and your , all your assignments , get done on time , without prompting , and that it's just a normal part of your routine yeah well , I don't like .
Speaker 2I don't think education has really ever been a problem , aside from my first few months at UChina , taking the leap from public to private school . I think I've adjusted . I've never had any issues with private school post-adjustments .
Speaker 1Nope , you're right . So it's just your opportunity to make sure those doors stay even wider . Open them even wider for yourself and don't let bad habits close the door for yourself , if that makes sense . Okay , my turn to ask what are your goals for the upcoming year ?
Speaker 2My goals so is this something's loud . So is this on the court or off ?
Speaker 1the court . Whatever your goals are , it's a new school year .
Speaker 2You have must have a new vision for yourself on the court I could say attitude , but I think I've always had pretty good attitude , like I . I always love hyping up my teammates or you know , kind of just being there . But I do think like sometimes if I make a bad play or or I miss a shot , I do get down in my , in my sorrows . I get kind of angry . So I think I want to work on not being so frustrated over one mistake because , everybody makes mistakes , it's just .
Speaker 2However , it's how you correct your mistake . Keep your shoulders up all the time . Yeah , I think Coach C has already preached that . He said he doesn't care if you miss a shot or turn the ball over . He cares if you run as fast as you can back on defense , right . So it's it's . It's just about correcting and and not getting down on myself .
Speaker 1That's good advice , Coach .
Speaker 2Z . I also want , like skill wise . Like skill-wise , I think I want to be more active , because I think , like obviously and I know that's my skill set is just like I'm a pretty good shooter . So I think all I've really done is kind of wait for my shots . Right , I think I should be this upcoming season . I want to be more like like , instead of waiting for my shots , I want to go get my shots .
Speaker 1That makes sense .
Speaker 2Like , because a lot of the times it's not easy to just like Like , it's not easy to have somebody on the court who only stays at the three point line . Right , so I want to , like you know , cut .
Speaker 2Maybe take a like , try and work on driving being more dominant with the ball in my hands , passing and even defensively . I want to be much more assertive . I think I got towards the end of the season it was noticeable that I was working a bit harder on defense . Okay , but I think I want to , I want that to be my norm and my working a bit harder to be , you know , two times more than that , right ? And then I want to make working harder my norm . So I kind of just want to . I want to put in more effort defensively and Use , use my , my , like God given skill set like my , my asset which is ?
Speaker 2I have a very good build for playing basketball . I have really long arms , which is good because that means I can reach around people and get steals and stuff . So I think I want to become a better defender .
Speaker 1That's a good goal to have for sure want to become a better defender .
Speaker 2That's , that's a good , that's a good goal to have for sure . And I think , academically , I just want to . I want to do better in all my classes , but specifically especially going into classes where because even last year uh , I wasn't last year in grade nine I was taking advanced classes so I was taking classes that were great up , but I wasn't the only one .
Speaker 2Obviously , like like Raph was also taking those classes with me , but now I'm going to be the only kid taking those classes in my grade , I think I mean . Maybe not , maybe I'm wrong , but as far as I know I'm going to . I don't know if anybody else is .
Speaker 1Somebody might , but who ?
Speaker 2knows . So I think , um , my goal is to uh shine , uh as bright as I can and , you know , do do the best in those classes and prove that . Uh , you know I belong there because last year was a bit different .
Speaker 1I like that answer .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1Okay ,
Keeping Doors Open
Speaker 1next question Do you have a mantra or like a theme for the upcoming year ?
Speaker 2I think , well , obviously our sort of personal mantra . We changed it . So what did you say ? It was now . Well , last year it was rise up , yeah it always used to be rise up , gotta , rise up .
Speaker 1But you said something different , this year Uh-oh is keep your doors open . Don't close your own doors .
Speaker 2Yeah , I think that's a good mantra . I mean especially getting to grade 10 , kind of realizing what I want to do in life . Yeah , you know , I don't want to think about it , but what if I don't end up being able to do what I want to do ? Keeping my doors open is having options being able to do what I want to do . Keeping my doors open is having options being able to do other things . So just working hard and not just focusing on one class , like sure , maybe you want to be a mathematician , but don't only be good at math , be good at English too , because then maybe you can't become a mathematician , maybe you become a philosopher .
Speaker 1Right , exactly . Don't be the one to limit yourself .
Speaker 2Exactly because , if you focus on one dream , and one dream only , what are you going to do if that one dream doesn't pan out Now ? You have no other options .
Speaker 1You have no other options . And it doesn't have to mean that you're going to be a mathematician or a philosopher or anything . It just means that you did your best in all you can do so that you can have your own choices later in life . Yeah yeah , if you want to be a burger flipper , buddy , we're always going to love you , but you just got to be the one to decide to be the burger flipper and not let that be decided for you because you didn't work hard enough to have other choices .
Speaker 2Yeah , and . I mean also as somebody like I , I , I love children and I love my family , and I want to have a family when I grow up not soon , right ? No , okay , I think , when I , when I just when I , when I have kids , I want to be able to help them with this type of thing as well . So that's also a part of keeping your options open , because if you don't keep your options open , what example are you showing for your children ?
Speaker 1That is very correct . All right , I love that answer . And then I'd like to hear one thing that you are confident about going into this school year and one thing that maybe you were nervous about .
Confidence and Nerves
Speaker 2So nervous I'm pretty nervous about . I'm pretty nervous about maybe I'll do confident first because nervous , I have to kind of figure out how to describe it so confident , I'm pretty confident in stepping up and taking a bigger role on the court and off the court , but definitely on the court . I want to , like I said earlier , I want to play more aggressive and more dominant and assertive . So I think that is what I'm confident about , because it's not something that you're back and forth with , back and forth with , or like not something you're in the middle about Right , You're not . You can't be on the fence about being better . You have to just be better behave better , be stronger , work harder .
Speaker 2You can't just half work harder . That's not really how it works . You either work harder or you don't . I think that's something I'm confident about , because I yeah , before I go to seniors , I want to be able to prove that I belong on a senior team , because you know , as a kid who , like , isn't a star player , I want to , you know , work my hardest so that I can get a spot on a senior team , because you know what , that's what I want nothing is given .
Speaker 2I don't want to be left behind or anything . So , yeah , okay , and then , um , worried about , or nervous about , I think I'm . I'm nervous that I won't be able to keep up like physically , because it's a lot of hard work that we've been doing , like a lot of sprinting and and running and distance running . I'm worried that I'm going to fall behind in terms of like athleticism because I'm not like I'm . I'm athletic for the average human . I'm not athletic for like the other basketball players or like the other people at the school . Right , I'm just like average . So I don't want to be , I don't want to be the guy that's always average in terms of that . So it's hard for me to work harder because obviously I don't have like the same , I don't have the stamina or anything .
Speaker 2But I think that's a part of it is that I need to push myself . That's a part of it is that I need to push myself . Even going back to it , coach Z said at the start of the year he gave us all kind of like personal goals and he said , because he knows me , he wants his goal is very specific and it's that he thinks the one thing that I can't get over he's saying like I've been getting better at everything Right , but the one thing I haven't been able to get over is mentally I can't push myself , which he's not wrong Like I have a very big . I have a big struggle pushing myself to do better . Right , but I think that's kind of something I'm nervous about is having the mental and physical capability to push myself as hard as I can , I see .
Speaker 1What do you think would help you get over this , the mental hurdle ?
Speaker 2I really have no idea . Um , because it's not something that like people can really help me with . I guess just like encouragement , but you know it's . It's really hard doing something like this , because it's also it's also not something somebody can give you advice on , because it's not like you or Jeff or Papa has ever done anything like this . Right , like none of you guys were waking up at five in the morning to do sprints for your team at 15 . Well , obviously everybody works hard , but it's the specifics and the it's the specifics about what I'm doing . So it's not like there's advice to be given about it aside from just like work hard , just do it . Yeah , exactly , but it's very difficult to just do .
Speaker 1Yeah , that makes sense . I mean , I think , like as an adult it's not really the same , but it is somewhat similar in that you know we , when you're an adult , you have a project that you need to complete for work , or you have a really big bill to pay for and sometimes mentally it becomes taxing . Big bill to pay for , and sometimes mentally it becomes taxing . But the more you do the hard things , the more confident you become and the easier these hard things become . It's really all that there is to it , and you also have to be able to look at how far you've come . So maybe you know , let's say , there's a goal to run a mile in a minute . Maybe you can't run a mile in a minute yet and it makes you a little bit anxious . But if you think of man , I used to run a mile in 10 minutes , but now I can run a mile in five minutes .
Speaker 1That definitely helps to get your nerves out of the way so being able to look at where you've come from and how far you've gotten , I think is super important .
Speaker 2Yeah , I mean , I've definitely , I've definitely gone farther .
Speaker 1Yeah , yeah . And then if you can see that you've actually gone further than you had ever imagined , then you know you'll be able to get even further still .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1All right . Well , that's . Those have been super interesting things to think about . It'll give us lots to talk about throughout the whole year during our dinner time check ins . I do have one last question , and speaking of dinner time , we're going to have to head out soon to start making dinner , but for a lot of the kids that are going back to school tomorrow , what's one piece of advice you'd share with them ?
Speaker 2me ,
Final Advice for Students
Speaker 2yeah , um uh , don't fall behind or get caught up with like , uh , the , don't get caught up in all them , the hubbub , like I think , something that the first year I was IU , jenna , I was falling behind because I was , I think , too busy , like you know , fooling around , goofing off and I think that's one of the big issues is , a lot of the times , you know , you just want to goof off and have fun , because obviously school is not just about , like , um , learning and , and , you know , going in and getting an education . School is also about the experience that you gain from it and um , having the , the knowledge and the wisdom , not just academically but , you know , uh , socially , to create and and and keep friends . But I think , uh , sometimes you just get too caught up in that . So just , I guess , don't get caught up yeah , that's a great .
Speaker 2That's a great and words of wisdom , sorry , and also for for kids who are my age so I'm 15 , grade 10 , going into grade 10 or you're already in grade 10 , this is a very important year because even if you're not going to college right away , you're about to be going to college right . So you're about to be going to college or university . You have to be prepared for that .
Speaker 1Yep , you got to start making sure your doors stay open .
Speaker 2Because now is when you get that opportunity and now is when that's looked at is your grades at this level , at this age ?
Speaker 1Yep , this is the start of it all . Well , it's pretty exciting stuff . You've had to share Lots of great words of wisdom , lots of strong insights . Do you have any wrap up notes that you'd like to pass on before we close off ?
Speaker 2No , not really .
Speaker 1No , just ready to go make dinner .
Speaker 2Yeah , ready to eat dinner .
